Re “Offshore wind eyed as future of power” (Oct. 9):

Harnessing wind power is a much-needed energy source helping us wean ourselves from fossil fuels. Wind turbines can be land or ocean based, being placed where the wind blows consistently.

Mr. Staggs’ article presents helpful information on floating platform ocean turbines. I understand the major disadvantages are about the design and expense.

I hope the recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act will bring us over those near-term hurdles. We can then concentrate on all of the advantages, which are tied to no ocean-floor anchors. From a planetary species perspective, it’s better for marine life. From a jobs and economic point of view, it’s easier to build and service. All can be done at port facilities and not out in the dangerous seas. I look forward to the world in which fossil fuel use is minimal, if at all.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has pitched a television ad urging voters to support Proposition 1. The governor’s support seems a little hypocritical since he has publicly opposed the death penalty.

He has argued about the lack of due process for convicted murderers, but offers no process for unborn children.

Apparently convicted murders can escape the death sentence, but not the unborn. Likewise his argument about unfair application of the death penalty is moot.

More minority children are aborted than White children.

Gas prices in the U.S.

Re “New tax would increase gas prices” (Oct. 12):

The editorial board has drunk the Kool-Aid. The editorial calls on President Biden to restart the Keystone XL pipeline to “bring more crude oil into our country for domestic use from Canadian oil fields.” I just “did my own research” and the very first entry in a web search reveals that “Gulf Coast refiners plan to refine the cheap Canadian crude supplied by the pipeline into diesel and other products for export to Europe and Latin America. Much of the fuel refined from the pipeline’s heavy crude oil will never reach U.S. drivers’ tanks.” Restarting the pipeline would take years for any dirty crude oil to reach refineries, and the resulting product would never reach our own gas tanks. It’s simply a false talking point.
