Ford Bronco Gets Stuck as Tide Rolls In, Becomes Failed Boat

The Ford Bronco can do a lot of things—go off-road, turn heads, command huge dealer markups. The Everglades version even comes with a snorkel, but that wouldn't have helped this one swim any better. Because there's one thing a Bronco definitely cannot do: float itself off a sand bar once the tide rolls in. And that's just what happened to this particular Ford Bronco. Someone, it seems, made a very poor decision.

And now there's one Bronco—a vehicle in very high demand, that reservation holders have been waiting for ages just to have the chance to purchase—that's very, very salty. The incident happened at the Bar Harbor sand bar, in southeastern Maine. At low tide, a sliver of beach is exposed, permitting access to Bar Island. And when the tide comes back in … well, you better not be on the bar. The window for staying dry is 90 minutes on either side of low tide.

Miss the window, and things go sideways fast. At Bar Harbor, the next low tide takes a leisurely 9 hours to arrive. Just a few minutes of immersion in salt water can wreak havoc on a vehicle's electronics and structure. Nine hours? Maybe just leave it in the drink as an artificial reef.

According to a local news site, WDEA AM 1370, an extraction was attempted. It did not go well. The ocean wasn't eager to give up its hard-won Bronco, as soft sand and locked-up wheels conspired to prevent the Bronco from being towed out. In what is sure to be an expensive solution, WDEA now reports that a diver will be called in to place airbags in the vehicle, hoping to float it up enough so that responders can beach the thing.

Will this Bronco ever draw the jealous gaze of long-suffering reservation-holders again? After spending its Easter weekend taking a long, cold bath, we think this one is destined for a scrapyard. What a shame. Read the signs before driving across the sand bar to the island, folks!
