Some behind-the-scenes footage from Our Flag Means Death captures a 360° look at the set of Stede Bonnet's ship, Revenge, seen throughout the series.

Behind-the-scenes footage from Our Flag Means Death gives a closer look at the set of the pirate ship, Revenge. Our Flag Means Death has immediately had viewers enthralled with its eccentric and heartfelt interpretations of real-world pirates. The HBO series tells the story of Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), Stede Bonnet aka the Gentleman Pirate (Rhys Darby), and his crew.

Production designer Ra Vincent has worked alongside Waititi on several of his other projects like Jojo Rabbit and What We Do in the Shadows. This time around, Vincent was tasked with creating a dynamic set that complimented the tone of the show without distracting from the performances. While Vincent says that the set is a simplified version of a real-life pirate ship, the cast was still awestruck when they first saw this massive structure. The dedication to creating the perfect ship was taken a step further as airbags were fitted to either side of the vessel, allowing the set to rock back and forth just like it would on the water.

Now, a closer look at the Revenge can be seen in some behind-the-scenes footage of Our Flag Means Death (via Twitter user @starmapps). Their impressive craftmanship is shown off as the entire ship’s deck is captured on film. The video also gives a glimpse at the going’s on in between shooting as several of the series cast are seen moving about the space in their costumes. Behind Matthew Maher (Black Pete) there’s, what looks like a watery projection, furthering the authentic at-sea feel. Check out the video below:

Originally, many of the cast believed Our Flag Means Death to be a much smaller production, so turning up to set to see a full ship was quite the shock. Cast compared the grand scale of the set and stunts to working on a Marvel production rather than the “half-hour workplace comedy about pirates” they had previously imagined. The crew’s dedication helped to submerge audiences into the pirates-at-sea setting but apparently, it took some getting used to as the constant rocking and wind machines left Samba Schutte (Roach) feeling sea-sick for the first week of shooting.

Although they do take some creative liberties, Our Flag Means Death has been overall accurate in its depiction of the real-life pirates that it features throughout the series. With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that the team would be willing to recreate a whole pirate ship for the actors to perform on. This new insight into the creative process gives fans yet another reason to love the people behind Our Flag Means Death.
