A host of public events are taking place across the island to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Island & Royal Manor of Portland Court Leet has announced plans to light a beacon on the evening of Thursday, June 2, 2022, the first evening of the four-day Jubilee weekend. It’s one of more than 2000 beacons being lit in the UK and across the Commonwealth, and forms part of the official programme announced by Buckingham Palace.

The beacon will be lit near the cenotaph opposite The Heights hotel. Other nearby beacon locations include Lyme Regis; Bridport; The Nothe Fort, Weymouth; Kimmeridge Bay and Swanage.

The evening’s event, which starts at 8.30pm, includes contributions from the Portland Community Choir, Weymouth Concert Brass and the Frome Valley Morris dancers. The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm. All are welcome!

In addition to the Beacon lighting, a host of street parties are taking place at various locations across the island over the weekend. Court Leet grants of £250 each have been awarded to: Friends of Wakeham Phone Box; Friends of Victoria Gardens; Easton Community Group combined with Easton Methodist Church; St Georges Church Flower Festival; Bumpers Lane Community Group; The Drop in; Islanders Club for Young People; Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust; and Island Community Action (ICA).

Comments Jane White, Bailiff of the Court Leet: “The Jubilee weekend promises to be a wonderful opportunity to get together as a community on Portland. The beacon enables us to join together and pay tribute to Her Majesty as part of the official programme of events.”
